The All New Fellowes Atom Rotary Trimmer - A Review

Rotary trimmers come in a lot of different sizes and vary in degrees of quality. If you've been searching for a wide-format, high-quality rolling cutter for your office, there's a new product you should consider: the Fellowes Atom Rotary Trimmer. Here's all you need to know about this device, including its strengths and its weaknesses.

Strengths:

There are two Atom models and they each have their own cutting length. The 180 can cut items that are up to 18 inches in length while the 150 can work with items that are 15 inches long.

Each unit - no matter what the cutting length - can slice through 30 sheets of normal copier/printer paper in one go. This is a very good amount, one of the highest available for this type of cutting device.

In addition to 20 lb. bond paper, the Atom can be used to trim a lot of other materials including foamboard and cardstock. You can even cut through plastic sheets with this device.

This product's blade is enclosed in plastic to prevent any injuries from occurring. The blade is fashioned from stainless steel and can be easily replaced, if necessary.

There are a handful of features that make this product easy to use. First, the base is imprinted with a protractor for angled cuts, as well as a cutting guide so you can accurately trim your work. A paper clamp will keep your materials from moving around when they're being cut. And there's also a back edge guide that's totally adjustable and can assist you when you need to do repetitive cutting.

This cutter will stay in place the entire time you're using it because there are non-skid feet on the bottom of it.

Although the 180 costs a bit more than the 150, the price difference isn't that large. Therefore, buying the larger device will be doable for a lot more people.

This is one of the most durable rotary trimmers available and it's constructed exceptionally well. It has a metal base that can withstand a lot of use and the entire product is covered by a very impressive 10-year warranty.

Weaknesses:

Obviously this product doesn't have the same trimming capacity as a guillotine trimmer, so it's not the device to use if you need to work with a big stack of paper.

Both of these devices are rather large, even the 150. The measurements of that product are 5" (height) x 14.75" (width) x 23.75" (depth), with the 180 being a few inches wider. These are definitely not the type of cutters you can tote around or keep in a desk drawer.

The Atom trimmer is a product that looks very utilitarian. It lacks the polished, attractive appearance of other Fellowes cutting products, such as the brand new PowerTrim.

After reading this rundown, it's pretty clear that the new Fellowes Atom Rotary Trimmer has a lot to offer anyone who needs this type of cutting device. So if your office needs a new rolling trimmer, consider buying this product today.

GBC Accucut A300 Swingline SmartCut Lite Rotary Trimmer Review

Overview:

The GBC Accucut A300 rotary trimmer is also being marketed as the Swingline Smartcut Lite. Although these two cutters have different names, they are identical.
The A300 is a personal rotary trimmer that is designed for trimming paper, scrapbook pages, presentations, desktop publishing projects and more.
It is designed to be an economical solution for home offices and small offices that are looking for low volume paper cutter.

Strengths / Features:

The Swingline Smartcut Lite offers a 12" cutting length that is ideal for trimming documents as large as 11" x 17" in size. It can also be used to trim 12" x 12" scrapbooking paper.
The Accucut A300 has a ruler along the top of the trimmer that offers both imperial and metric measurements. It also has an alignment grid printed on the base of the cutting unit. This alignment grid is ideal for helping to ensure that you get straight cuts every time.
The cutting blade on the A300 travels along a transparent cutting guide that allows users to see exactly where the blade will travel. This helps to ensure the most accurate cuts possible.
The Smartcut Lite comes equipped with a stainless steel round cutting blade that is capable of cutting up to 10 sheets of paper at a time. However, the trimmer can also be equipped with a perforator blade for perforating paper or with a wave cutting blade for adding decorative edges to your paper.
The Accucut A300 has a convenient easy grip handle that travels along a metal rail. In order to cut a document you simply need to press down on the handle to engage the blade.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

The GBC Accucut A300 is made primarily for personal and home office use. For this reason, it is made almost entirely made of plastic. The GBC Accucut A400pro is the same size and offers the same cutting length as the A300 but utilizes metal components instead of plastic ones. The plastic components make the A300 far less durable than larger professional grade rotary trimmers.
Although the Smartcut Lite is rated to cut up to ten sheets of paper, it is really not ideal for cutting more than a few sheets of paper at any given time. It is really more of a trimmer than a cutter. A guillotine style paper cutter is better for cutting small stacks of paper while a rotary trimmer is best used for trimming laminated documents and other materials.
The A300 uses a special cutting mat that is placed underneath the rotary cutting blade. The cutting mat helps to ensure the quality of trimming provided by the trimmer. The cutting mat needs to be replaced or reversed on a regular basis in order to ensure high quality cuts. It is always a good idea to keep an extra cutting mat on hand in case you need to replace the mat on your cutter.

Recommendation:

For organizations that need to trim a few documents or want to add either a decorative edge or a perforated section to their documents the Smartcut Lite is a logical choice.
However, it is important to recognize that this is a paper cutter that is designed for personal use. The plastic construction of the A300 makes it a decent choice for scrapbooking and craft projects. However, it is less than ideal for commercial applications or any type of volume trimming.
It is also important to remember that the Smartcut lite is designed as a trimmer and not a cutter. For any type of volume cutting, a guillotine paper cutter is a better solution.

GBC Accucut A530pro Smartcut Rotary Paper Trimmer Review

Overview:

The GBC Accucut A530pro is the largest trimmer in the GBC Smartcut 500 series of professional rotary paper trimmers.
The A530 has a 24 inch long cutting path which makes it ideal for cutting matboard, poster paper, trimming laminated documents and for other heavy duty trimming applications.
The Smartcut A530pro is a high quality rotary trimmer is a professional quality trimmer for both personal and industrial applications.

Features / Strengths:

The A530pro has a heavy duty metal rail that the rotary blade holder travels along. This metal bar along with the clamping system included on the A530 helps to ensure perfectly straight cuts every time.
In addition to the extra long cutting length offered by the A530pro it also offers a large heavy duty metal cutting table. The cutting table is marked with both imperial and metric measurements and also has an alignment grid printed on the cutting table. The alignment grid is designed to help in ensuring that materials are straight square before cutting.
The A530pro has a unique clamping system that is not found on most other professional rotary trimmers. The clamping system helps to hold items in place during trimming and also locks the metal rail in place so the blade travels true and straight.
The A530 also includes a transparent cutting guide that helps to show you the exact path that the blade will travel.
The A530pro is made almost entirely of metal and not plastic. This helps to ensure that the A530 will stay square and true over time. It also helps to ensure that the A530 will hold up in commercial settings where high volume trimming may be required.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

The A530pro has a 24 inch long cutting path but only a 14 inch wide cutting base. This can make trimming wide materials difficult since the alignment grid and measurements on the cutting base become useless for items with more than fourteen inches to the left of the blade.
The Smartcut A530pro is designed for trimming paper and laminated documents. Other trimmers have optional blades for scoring, wave cutting or perforating. The A530pro does not offer any of these features. It is strictly a trimmer.
The A530pro requires the use of a cutting mat to ensure high quality cuts. This cutting mat will become worn over time and needs to periodically be replaced. It is always a good idea to have an extra cutting mat on hand in order to ensure the highest quality cuts.

Recommendation:

With a twenty four inch cutting length, heavy duty metal construction and a high quality paper clamping system the A530pro is an excellent choice for high quality professional trimming.
The A530pro is a great choice for schools, print shops and organizations that need to trim large format documents.
Although the A530 Pro is rated to cut up to 30 sheets of paper, it is best used as a paper trimmer and not a paper cutter. The blade will last longer and quality will be much better for trimming materials a few sheets at a time than it will be for high volume cutting applications.
